According to the dictionary, the phrase “stay in touch” means:

 

“to maintain contact with another person, especially at intervals so as to remain up to date with each other’s lives.”

 

“Stay in touch” is indicating that an individual wants to keep communicating with another so they will be “close” – like good friends. And if there is a desire to maintain communication with someone it usually implies that the speaker or communicator wants to continue exchanging information or news with the other person despite any physical distance or time apart from each other.
