The Betsy Ross Union Flag
The Betsy Ross Union Flag, often referred to simply as the Betsy Ross flag, is one of the earliest designs of the American flag and holds a special place in U.S. patriotic tradition.
The 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies. The red represented courage, while the white symbolized purity and innocence. The 13 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle in the blue union, or canton, denoting unity and equality among the original colonies, with no colony being above another. The stars are white on a blue field, with the union representing vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Traditionally attributed to Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia upholsterer and seamstress, said to have sewn the first American flag in 1776 after a visit from George Washington and two other members of the Continental Congress. The story was popularized in the 1870s by her grandson, William Canby, while no definitive historical proof ties Ross to the first flag's design. Regardless of historical uncertainty, the Betsy Ross flag is iconic, representing the spirit of American independence, unity, and revolution.
The flag is often used to honor the nation's founding and is especially popular during Independence Day celebrations, historical reenactments, and military or patriotic displays. It is also featured in heritage displays, commemorative works, and patriotic woodcraft design, like that which is shown.
