EMTs, or Emergency Medical Technicians, are medical professionals trained to provide basic and intermediate emergency medical care and transport patients to hospitals or other medical facilities, often serving as the first responders at the scene of an accident or medical emergency. EMTs provide medical care under a set of protocols, which are typically written by a physician.

An EMT is not a type of doctor, nurse, or physician’s assistant. They are also different from paramedics, another type of emergency medical professional. The main difference is that paramedics have more training and can perform a wider variety of procedures. EMTs work on ambulances, helping get people to the hospital. They may also work with fire departments and air rescue teams.
