While a “fireman” is mainly a person employed to extinguish or prevent fires, they are also known as a firefighter and are inclusive to both men and women. They are trained to control and extinguish fires, rescue people from dangerous situations, and provide fire prevention guidance. Firefighters also play a role in other emergency situations, including hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and floods. They are trained in Search and Rescue operations, locating and rescuing people from burning buildings or other hazardous situations. In addition, Firefighters often provide first aid and basic medical care to injured individuals until more advanced medical personnel arrive on scene.
Today, a firefighter is considered a first responder trained in firefighting, primarily to control and extinguish fires that threaten life and property, as well as to rescue persons from confinement or dangerous situations. Firefighters also work closely with other emergency response agencies such as the police or emergency medical services, while their role may overlap with both. Fire investigators or fire marshals investigate the cause of a fire. If the fire was caused by arson or negligence, their work will overlap with law enforcement.
