"In God We Trust" is the official national motto of the United States, as well as the motto of the U.S. state of Florida. It was officially adopted in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower. The phrase has been used on US coins since the Civil War.
History of the Phrase
- In 1861, a Christian minister from Pennsylvania requested that the US Treasury recognize God on coins.
- In 1864, the phrase "In God We Trust" first appeared on a two-cent coin.
- In 1956, Congress unanimously passed a resolution making "In God We Trust" the national motto, replacing E pluribus unum ("Out of many, one"), which had been the de facto motto since the initial design of the Great Seal of the United States.
- In 2006, the Senate reaffirmed the motto on its 50th anniversary.
- In 2011, the House of Representatives reaffirmed the motto.
