The United States Military Department of Defense flag is an executive branch department of the federal government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising the five U.S. armed services, the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, the Coast Guard for some purposes, and related functions and agencies.

 

On August 7, 1789, Congress established the War Department at the cabinet level to oversee the operation and maintenance of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. It was renamed the Department of Defense on August 10, 1949, as part of the National Security Act of 1947, which also created the National Military Establishment (NME).
