The Maltese cross, a symbol of protection, courage, and service, is worn by firefighters to represent their willingness to lay down their lives to protect others, mirroring the sacrifices of the Knights of Malta. The Order of the Knights of Malta were a Catholic military order that served as protectors of the Christian faith and provided aid to the sick and wounded during the Crusades. The eight points of the Maltese cross are said to represent the eight tenets of the Order of Malta: loyalty, piety, honesty, courage, honor and glory, contempt for death, solidarity towards the poor and the sick, and respect for the Church.
