The Department of State Seal
The United States Department of State, often referred to simply as the State Department, is the federal executive branch responsible for the carrying out of U.S. foreign policy and international relations. It serves as the diplomatic arm of the U.S. government and is the equivalent of foreign ministries in other countries.
The State Department conducts diplomacy on behalf of the U.S. with foreign nations and international organizations. It negotiates treaties and agreements, advises the President and formulates foreign policy. The Department also promotes American values such as democracy, human rights, and free markets.
The Department manages more than 270 embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions around the world, making it one of the most far-reaching governmental organizations globally. It is important to note that the State Department is the oldest executive department in the U.S. government, being established on July 27, 1789. Thomas Jefferson was named the first Secretary of State.
