The United States Department of Defense Seal
The U.S. Department of Defense, or DoD, is a cabinet-level executive branch department responsible for coordinating and supervising all functions of the U.S. Armed Forces. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force, as well as the Coast Guard when operating under DoD authority during wartime or by presidential order.
Originally established by Congress as the War Department on August 7, 1789, it was created to oversee the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. Following World War II, the National Security Act of 1947 reorganized the military structure, establishing the National Military Establishment. This entity was later renamed the Department of Defense on August 10, 1949, unifying the separate military departments under a single executive department to better coordinate national defense.
The brave men and women of our military services, whether they are currently serving, have served in the past, or are retired – they are all heroes! We salute you! We honor you! We remember you! Help us celebrate these heroes – they truly deserve our thanks and admiration.
