The Marine Corps Logo Flag

The history of the Marine Corps logo is a story related to the history of the Corps itself. The emblem of today traces its roots to the designs and ornaments of early Continental Marines, as well as the British Royal Marines. The emblem took its present form in 1868. Before that time many devices, ornaments, and distinguishing marks followed one another as official marks of the Corps.

In 1776, the device consisted of a “foul anchor” of silver or pewter. The foul anchor still forms a part of the emblem today. As an explanation, a foul anchor is an anchor which has one or more turns of the chain around it. Changes to the emblem were made in 1798, 1821, 1824, and 1834. On June 22, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an Executive Order, which approved the current design of an official seal for the United States Marine Corps.

The United States Marine Corps emblem is one of the most recognizable military symbols in the world: rich in tradition, honor, and meaning. It consists of three main elements.

First is the eagle which represents the United States, showing that the Marine Corps is a proud defender of the country. Its outstretched wings suggest readiness and vigilance. The eagle clutches a scroll bearing the Marine Corps motto: “Semper Fidelis,” Latin for “Always Faithful”, which is a core value that defines every Marine.

Next, the globe represents the worldwide presence and readiness of the Marine Corps to serve anywhere, anytime. Traditionally, it is shown to emphasize America's influence and responsibility across the Western hemisphere and the Americas.

And finally, the fouled anchor signifies the Marine Corps' close ties to the U.S. Navy and its role as an amphibious force-in-readiness. It symbolizes that Marines can operate on land and sea: historically, from the decks of Navy ships to the beaches of battle.

This emblem, formally adopted in 1868, is more than just a logo: it’s a badge of honor worn by war fighters who have earned the title United States Marine. Whether it’s on a uniform, flag, or gravestone, it stands for courage, sacrifice, and a fighting spirit that never stops.
