Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration
Vietnam War veterans are the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era, roughly from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, with most combat operations occurring between 1964 and 1973. Over 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam, and more than 58,000 lost their lives, while hundreds of thousands more were wounded, captured, or remain missing in action.
These veterans endured harsh combat conditions, difficult terrain, and extreme climate, while facing a determined enemy. They returned home to a nation divided over the war, and many were denied the honor and recognition given to veterans of previous wars. Despite the political climate, their service was marked by loyalty, courage, and self-sacrifice.
Today, Vietnam War veterans are finally receiving the respect they earned. Efforts like the Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration ensure that their legacy is remembered, their service honored, and their sacrifices acknowledged – with dignity and gratitude.
Established by the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, the Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration was authorized by Congress and directed by the Secretary of Defense to honor the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. By presidential proclamation, the Commemoration spans from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025.
It is our mission to thank and honor Vietnam War veterans and their families, recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. and allied forces, and ensure that this chapter of American history is never forgotten.
